CONTEXT

November 2024 — Walmart Pharmacy launched prescription delivery, a major feature that differentiates Walmart from competitors. With this update, users no longer need to drive to the pharmacy—they can track prescriptions directly in the app and receive them at home within a few days.

THE PROBLEM

As users' prescription lists grew, it became increasingly difficult to navigate and understand the status of each prescription or what action to take next.

Key issues identified:

Inability to archive prescriptions.
Poor sorting logic in the Rx list.
Limited filtering options.

solution

1. User Research & Information Hierarchy

We conducted user research to understand what information mattered most, and used this to define a clear visual hierarchy for the prescription list.

2. Prioritized info

To minimize cognitive load, we surfaced the most important prescriptions at the top—those ready for refill—followed by those in progress, outdated, or out of refills.

3. Archiving Capability

For users selecting “I can’t find my pharmacy,” we added a smart nudge that quickly guided them into the correct flow, minimizing friction.

4. Enhanced Filters and Sorting

We enhanced error messaging for cases where users searched for a Walmart pharmacy after selecting the non-Walmart transfer flow, ensuring clarity and guidance.

5. Improved Error and Empty States

We designed clear error states and informative empty states to guide users and reduce confusion when no results are shown or when something goes wrong.
